Step through a portal, one with an unending smell of nature – like the sea on the western coastline that sees childhood come and go as they splash the rocks with unending grace. Kevin Lowery, born in Galway on Ireland’s West coast in 1983, is an oil painter known for his depiction of the sea and its surrounding that evokes thoughts of harmony but also ignites longings to spend the night with the glistering pebbles. Even if you’ve never seen one. This desire becomes more noticeable in his paintings that show the subtle reflection of the sun on those pebbles – in an array of colours affected by yellow sparks, or those a step away from the blessings that come with natural water.
Think of the saying by Candace Cameron Bure: “the memories we make with our family is everything.” Some of the things desired in life were influenced from childhood and we remember the things longed for or are curious about. And they can be honed by encouraging words. For Kevin, creativity is more like a genetic trait passed on. His mother painted in watercolours while his father drew in ink and pencil. Kevin comments, that having artistic parents meant that his own creativity was always encouraged growing up.

Living by the sea on Ireland’s West coast for most of his life has also had an influence on the subject of his work. Look at the paintings of the rolling surf, merciless oceanic turmoil, and the ever-changing skies found along the coastline— are signs, Kevin is a true nature bird. He presents the climate in its true form without faking tranquility, which we know is a fraction of what the sea is. When it comes to nature, humans have always had a shared intimate relationship with their elements, and Kevin depicts the life-changing moments in his paintings, by altering climatic conditions and depicting shifting lights on the water.

This idea of presentation is the heart of Kevin Lowery’s art-making.
